Bio

In the summer of 1969 I had graduated from the U. of D., enrolled in graduate school, gotten married (first of three), was waiting to hear from the draft board about a tour of Viet Nam, wished I could go with my friends to a concert at a place called Woodstock, and watched in awe as humans stepped foot on the moon. That September I started teaching at Wilmington High School (currently the home of Cab Calloway School and Wilmington Charter). Ten years later I heard about a new program starting in the county serving the needs of academically gifted students. I interviewed for a position in the program. I was given quite a bit of freedom in being able to select subjects that were demonstrated to expand the interests and abilities of students who challenged the teacher as the teacher challenged them. Over the next thirty years I taught at A.I. duPont Middle School, Heritage, Linden Hill, Warner, and Brandywine Spring Elementary Schools. Once I was honored by being selected the district teacher of the year. I retired in June, 2010, and am residing with my wonderful wife Christine. I am on the board of the Delaware Photographic Society. Talk to me if you'd like to join. I spend my summers growing vegetables and fruit.

Memories

“The Circuit” – Early evenings would start on the blacktop basketball court behind P.S. If it got too dark, sometimes we would climb on the roof to readjust the spotlights. Then it was on to Matson Run to see if anyone knew what was going on. Listening to AM pop stations, we would drive up to the Pit on Concord Pike. We'd drive around the parking lot until we were eyeballed by Charbelly. Forced to buy something, we'd get in the takeout line, changing positions to extend our stay. Back to the car and, with any luck, we found someone's house where we could go. Sometimes we would just sit in the car and listen to the Phillies game. Life was good.

I will always remember Miss Green, the Historical Society with Mr. Neal, working on the Pierrean, Prom, and Graduation with Chief Justice Daniel Herrmann as the speaker.

NameMaryann (Brown) Brown-Martin
Bio

Recently, I relocated to Laurel, Maryland to be near my family. I have had two great careers: social work and financial services. Recently I retired after 32 years as a Financial Advisor. I enjoy baking, and I anticipate it will be my next semi-career, since I bake the best chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter cookies and pound cake you have ever tasted.

Love traveling and have lived in Washington State, Germany, Philadelphia and North Carolina. My daughter has the same love of travel as she went to undergrad in Chicago and grad in Miami. She lives in LA now and is a writer/Film Maker attempting to get her script “REPASS” to the big screen.

Memories

My best memories were attending our basketball games starring Ron Harris, Lucky Stone and Butch Williams and my time in Leader Corps.

NameRobert “Bob” Brown
SpouseNorm Lynde
Bio

After graduating from Delaware State College—now Delaware State University—I began the next chapter of my life in Rochester, New York, where I worked for Eastman Kodak for a decade. While the professional experience was rewarding, the harsh winters eventually nudged me westward. I relocated to San Francisco, where I spent the next 35 years building both a career and a life.

In San Francisco, I worked as a project manager for several corporations before finding my long-term professional home at Kaiser Permanente, a leading healthcare organization. I remained with Kaiser until my retirement in June 2016.

San Francisco wasn’t just where I worked—it was where I shared a life with my late husband, Bob Hayn, until his passing in April 2015. His memory remains a cherished part of my journey. In August 2017, I was fortunate to find love again and married a truly special man, Norm Lynde. Together, we recently closed the San Francisco chapter and moved to a retirement community in Walnut Creek, California, embracing a new season of life with warmth and optimism.

Memories

One would think that my best of memories high school would be Mr Laird's plays, Senior Choir with Mr Reid and Band and that would be somewhat true. The actual best memories are the friendships that I developed by participating in those activities and how we all prepared each other for life after high-school.

We spent our first 75 years – 50 years of that married – in Wilmington. I was an elementary teacher in the Brandywine District, then worked with the Univ. of Del. as a student teacher coordinator and later a private tutor. I was as well the CFO at our downtown electronics distribution location. I enjoyed gardening and watercolor painting.

Memories

There are so many happy memories for me from PS. Best of all, cheerleader practices and games, and the Leader Corp room and friends. Miss Hay, Miss Shadd, Mrs. Jenny, Mrs. Chady and Mrs. Gressle all probably had an influence on my decision to become a teacher. Dear Mrs. Farrand waved to Art and me as we left the parking lot one morning on June 3rd as we were skipping school for the day. Yes, she called our parents, and yes, it was worth it. We all were so lucky to have such an outstanding collection of teachers and to share them with wonderful classmates of such diversity and talent.

Memories

Best memories: Enjoyed the football games and riding down Market Street after a winning game, wildly shaking our pompoms out the window. Then there were the basketball games, especially the year PS won the Blue Hen Conference Basketball Championship. And hanging out by the lockers between classes. I felt so grown-up on graduation night. Favorite Memory: The one and only time I ever bagged a class was Mrs. Autman's gym class. I got caught and so did the person who called out my # in gym class. We still laugh about this 50 years later.

NameLucy (Fahey) Webster
NameDorothy “Dottie” (Geist) Manuel
Bio

Married to Richard Manuel for 18 years, widowed for 37years. Five children – John (in FL), Richard (dec.), Mark (dec,), Kathleen and Brian, as well as 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

I graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1968 and began my more than 55 years of employment there. I tell everyone I grew up there! In my years as a staff nurse, I cared for several of our former teachers. For approximately 35 years, I have worked as Clinical Administrator, mostly on night shift. I love to read, travel and attend plays and shows. I am looking forward to the coming subscription series at the Playhouse.

Memories

Trading places with my twin to do dissections in 9th grade science. The teacher never knew! Having my chemistry notebook stolen from my locker and being given only one day to redo it. Then I got an A- because it was late!

NameRuth (Geist) Westendorf
SpouseChuck
Bio

Married to Charles (Chuck) Westendorf (Alexis I. DuPont grad) for 54 years. We have two sons and six grandchildren. Matthew and his wife and three children live in West Lafayette, IN. Michael is deceased; his wife and three children live in Dover – much closer to home! In 2010, I began my bionic woman journey, getting my first total knee replacement, following in 2012 with my other knee, as well as other “upgrades”!

After graduation, I continued my employment with DuPont until my children were born, went on a part-time role for a few years, was involved with school and church activities and also had a secretarial service in my home. I went back to DuPont until my husband (also with DuPont) got transferred to Greenville, SC. I actually moved in next door to a fellow P.S. grad (1959) who was my cousin’s best friend in school – talk about small world! We then spent two years in Parkersburg, WV before coming back to Delaware in 1992. That year, I began a 22-year career as a marketing/proposal coordinator with the Newark office of BE&K Engineering, an E&C firm from Birmingham, AL that was later acquired by (KBR) Kellogg, Brown & Root from Houston, TX. I retired in 2014 and became a part of the “sandwich” generation, spending time with my elderly mother and then my 2-year old granddaughter in Dover. I spent my days reliving old memories with mom and making new ones with our granddaughter. I especially enjoyed my time with her as we got to experience the kinds of things we missed with our other “grands” living 700 miles away. While I enjoy reading and shows, I am a devoted “rubber stamping addict” who makes all my own greeting cards (about 300 a year) and spending time with old friends and crafting buddies.

Memories

Definitely trading places with my twin Dottie to dissect a frog in 9th grade science. Dottie thinks Mr. Rusnak didn’t know about it but he definitely did! I had to sit in his office the next day and draw a perfect diagram from the textbook. Our all girls’ English class in 9th grade with Mr. Laird – great bunch of ladies! The level of talent in the wonderful shows by Mr. Laird and Mr. Reid. I was proud to be on the yearbook staff, only to receive my copy of the yearbook and discover that, once again, we had gotten mixed up! Our write-ups each had the other person’s picture with it.

NameConstance “Connie” (Georgis) Dougherty
Bio

I was married to my ‘high school days’ sweetheart, Vince, until 2005, when he sadly passed. Of course, that was difficult, but I am blessed with two great children, Ken and Kelly. Ken has a lovely daughter, Isabella, 14, and Kelly has two adorable children, Madeleine, who is 9, and Tyler, who has just turned 6. As any proud grandmother would say, they are a joy.

I spent many years teaching preschool – 4 and 5 year olds. That was both rewarding and fun – HONEST-haha!! Now I spend my time doing some traveling (I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Greece), volunteering, spoiling my grandchildren, and ‘hanging out’ with my many friends. They, too, are a blessing in my life.

Memories

A fond memory I have of my high school years is attending the football games and then heading to the Charcoal Pit and “tackling” a huge Dynamiter sundae with a group of friends. Those were the days – No Guilt!

I spent our first 75 years – 50 years of that married – in Wilmington. I was CEO of D&M Electronics Inc. for 35 years during the technology changes that the computer era brought. I was able to retire in 2003. We are now living on the beach in Fort Lauderdale along the Galt Mile and enjoying the sunshine palm trees and outdoor activities. The area is very convenient for cruising which we love to do.

We have two sons, one in Yardley Pa who is an IT supervisor for a financial company with three locations nationwide. He is married and threy have two children in college. Our other son is an environmental compliance manager for Broward County airports and has two younger children. We love living nearby to them to watch these grandchildren grow as we did our other two.

I continued with a music hobby, and was saxophonist for a 12 piece horn band for 12 years, and since retiring, I have enjoyed pursuing the game of golf or maybe chasing after the game of golf.

P.S. DuPont was an icon among high schools. I don’t think we really appreciated what a fine experience we had until later years.. we were all so very lucky.

Memories

The great plays and musicals every year, Ms.Gormley's English classes, and being with friends, many we have kept through the years. Sigma Phi's Crystal Ball and Sunday meetings were always fun. PS and our class were very special.

Bio

I didn’t make it to graduation, since I was off in Düsseldorf, Germany with AFS. After only a few weeks home, I left again for Dickinson College, where I met my husband, Bob. We’ve been married 45 years and have lived all over — Hanover NH, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Short Hills, NJ, and San Francisco, as dictated by his career in investment banking. In 2000, he wandered home from the bank one morning and announced, “Guess what? I just retired!” It was a red letter day — our oldest came home from college soon after and announced, “Guess what? I just got my belly button pierced!” A year later we moved to Williamsburg, VA. We have been blessed with good health and 2 wonderful daughters. Anne (35) ditched the belly button ring when she married Ryan Eckhoff, and they live in Ridgefield, CT, with their 2 kids, Kayla (4) and Bryant (2). Great kids! But after babysitting them for a week, I think our 18-year spacing was much easier! Jamie (17) is a high school senior. We put over 3000 miles on my car this summer, visiting what seemed like every college on the East Coast north of Washington DC. I'm not sure the Common App is much of an improvement over the “old school” application process — Ask me after she hits send!

Memories

Best memories would be leader corps stuff – football concessions, Miss Gilgenast on the rings at tryouts, going to the beach with the seniors when I was a junior, since I would not be there senior year, having our own little space, so we didn’t need lockers. All I know is I still have the occasional nightmare where I can’t find my locker, or I'm lost trying to get to lunch or the gym!

I'm currently being treated for an acute leukemia. So any travels will be subject to my doc's say-so. This interrupted a 35 year career in adult and pediatric anesthesia; don’t know yet whether I'll go back to work. I have a lovely wife who has been an amazing caretaker. Memories

My most memorable times in PS were really just hanging with my friends, getting lunch from the Post House, math class with Mr. Ferrell, and Mr. Gardner, our principal. My high school years seem to me to be the best, which is why I decided to help organize the reunion. Can’t wait to see everyone!

NameDavid Kristol

Bio

Hmmm, how do you summarize 60 years? Let's see. I’ve been married 49 years, no children, one fur-kid. I retired in 2015 after a 40-year career in software development, which has been my passion since 1964. I’ve had four employers, including Bell Labs (19 years) and Boeing (12 years). I continue to marvel that we're all walking around with computers in our pockets that are far more powerful than the room-size computers I first used.

My wife, Marjorie, retired in 2012. She was a Professor of Microbiology at NJ Medical School. Unfortunately, she has developed dementia and is now in a memory care facility.

I’ve lived in PA, MA, and NJ, with a detour to AZ while in the Army, and annual summer visits to ME. Among my hobbies: gardening, bicycling, birding, listening to classical music, small personal computer programming projects.

I volunteer in a furniture restoration workshop that's associated with a local seniors support organization. Customers bring in furniture to be repaired, and the proceeds from the repair support the organization. All the workers are seniors, so conversations revolve around topics of interest, like hip replacements, names of good plumbers, appealing TV programs,… mixed with good-natured trash talk.

Memories

I'm thankful for the great preparation my favorite teachers at P.S. gave me: Mr. Ferrell, Mrs. Chady, Mrs. Nale. And I'm ever thankful that Miss Bryson was a stickler for grammar and rhetoric. Another great memory is the Honor Society trip to Washington, D.C. Our charones admonished us not to climb the steps in the Washington Monument. You can guess what happened.

Anyone remember this… “Community: a group of people living and working together for the good of all.”

Another specific memory: In Miss Bryson's English class, I was talking about something and used the work “snuck.” Miss Bryson game me a withering look, and I sheepishly said “Sneaked?”

How ironic! The NFL and I have been celebrating the same “numbers” for years! While they have the Super Bowl, I, and my husband, Stan, have wedding anniversaries (this year, our 49th!). We're the parents of Faith, 46; Bill, 44; Ellen, 41; and the grandparents of Zack, 6.

I have been employed by the DuPont Company, Gratz Hebrew High School, two Nursing Homes, and the Department of Elections. I’ve also held community positions and served my local synogogue board.

Then, when I received three different diagnoses, I chose to put myself “On Hold (Temporary).” I'm extremely lucky to have walked through all the doors, and now able to enjoy life again. Thank G-d, my entire family and my life are back to me. I have traveled around the world, volunteered, and cooked for less fortunate people.

Memories

I'll always remember the neighborhoods around P.S. (and even the downtown area!); the inscription over the main doors: P.S. DuPont High School; wearing so much blue and gray (on Fridays); chairing the Pierrean's layout staff; being a part of P.S.‘s chorus and choir; and appearing in lots of Mr. Bruce Laird's (GREAT) performances; and, of course, all of my close friends.

P.S. was special. We probably didn’t know at the time how special it was. Friendships crossed the lines of economic classes, race and religion. We just genuinely all liked each other, played together and enjoyed each other. Also, Mrs Levy's English class still haunts me.

After living in New Jersey, Delaware, and then New York, my family and I moved to South Florida 29 years ago. I have 3 married children: Shari (48), Jason (44, soon to be 45), and Josh (44 in Sept). They have, in total, gifted me with 11 grandchildren, from 24yrs. to 21 months; 9 grand-dogs; 3 grand-horses, a few grand-cats and a partridge in a pear tree! As a dog lover myself I have this wonderful new 110 lb “Star” in my life!

For over 28 years I have both volunteered and worked within the non-profit community, primarily relating to oncology and other critical illnesses. As an independent patient navigator and advocate, I established Health Support Services, LLC 3+ years ago. I work with survivors and support persons throughout the US.

Memories

I have such an array of memories at P.S., from dances to football games, and from Biology Club To Mr. Ferrell's senior year homeroom… all worth remembering! But nothing compares to the friendships and the memory of such a close knit school and community that continue to make me smile to this day. We were all SO LUCKY to have been a part of this wonderful high school!

I moved to the Washington, D.C., area after graduating from Goldey-Beacom College as an Executive Secretary to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in Northern Virginia. I fell madly in love with the energy and beauty of D.C. almost immediately and still feel the same way about it today. Two years after moving to D.C., I married my husband, Joe, who was in the U.S. Army at the time. Two years later, we were assigned to the Stuttgart, Germany area through the Army, where we lived for three years and where our first daughter was born. From there we were assigned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where our son was born.

We moved back to Delaware after my husband was discharged from the Army and accepted a Postal Service position in Wilmington. Our youngest daughter was born about a few years later. At age two she developed Type I Diabetes. Gee, I'm beginning to see a “two-year pattern” here – hmmm. As a result, I became heavily involved with the Delaware Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is an organization that sole fundraises to support diabetes research to find a cure for Type I Diabetes. I returned to work when our youngest entered the first grade after being asked by a veterinarian if I would be interested in working for his animal clinic.

Throughout the years here in Delaware, I have also worked for the Justice of the Peace Court System, the State Office of Volunteerism, Cigna Insurance Company, and Christiana Care Health System (where I started out working in the hospital's Medical Libraries and presently am in the Pastoral Services Department). I have volunteered for many years for a local hospice organization, visiting patients. In 2005, I volunteered with the American Red Cross and spent three weeks in the New Orleans, LA, area directly following Hurricane Katrina (which actually proved to be one of the very best experiences of my life) to offer support to Katrina's victims while they were in Red Cross shelters. While there, I adopted an amazing dog who had found herself homeless after the hurricane. I returned to New Orleans two years later for two weeks (hmmm – back to the “two-year” thing again) to help in the reconstruction of a home in the Ninth Ward for a displaced family.

Memories

One of the things I enjoyed while in high school was playing field hockey during gym classes. I also look back with a smile on my face when I think of attending our school's basketball and football games. Fun times.

More or less chronologically outlined: Washington and Lee University, BS Chemistry. Three months hitch-hiking in Europe (during college). Chicago Democratic Convention during cross-country road trip to California with Dick Codor. (during college). Woodstock. Cross country trip with Dick Codor for first shot at graduate school at U of Cal., Irvine. Codor was headed to SF for an art school. Missed my ride to Altamont. Left Irvine for: Peace Corps, Kenya East Africa (but managed after couple of months hitch-hiking in Europe again before I actually reported). University of Delaware, Masters in Chemistry. (I was a “professional student” living on a teaching assistant’s salary for too many years. It was a fun life.) Ran a full marathon. Walked about 600 miles of the northern part of the Appalachian Trail. Spent a couple of months in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Guatemala. Employed by Schlumbrger-Doll Research (SDR) Lab in Ridgefield CT, a research center for the oil filed service company. I developed magnetic resonance applications for well logging. Enjoyed jogging, skiing, cycling, squash, hashing (Hash House Harriers) and contra-dancing. Married Linda Mooney. Linda was born in England, her family emigrated to Canada and later to USA. We met contra dancing. We bought a house in Ridgefield CT. Our requirements from the realtor were room for gardening, room for a woodworking shop and a two car garage. We didn’t care about the rest as long as we could afford the place. Received PhD in Chemistry from U of D while working at SDR. Our only daughter, Emily, was born. I retired when SDR relocated to Cambridge, Mass., and became Mr. Mom. Linda continued working. Emily went on to attend McGill University and UVM medical school. Linda retired about nine years after I retired. We have made several trips with Viking or Road Scholar. Visited Europe (England, central, northern, eastern) various times, Brazil, Peru, Equator, Costa Rica. Emily is finishing Residency in EM at UVM hospital, Burlington VT. Linda and I relocated to Hancock, VT. We enjoy hiking, skiing, cycling and gardening. (Linda is the gardener, I am labor.) I do some woodwork in my basement shop. Linda wants to go to Australia and New Zealand in the future.

NameDaniel “Danny” Tanzer

Bio

Career: Mostly in the supermarket industry. For the 10 years or so before I retired, was director of sales and marketing for the Shop/Rite group in Delaware.

I attended NYU, graduating in 1969. Living in NYC while attending school was a terrific experience. I saw most of the top rock acts, and played in a number of clubs and schools all over the city, and at some schools outside of the City, and as far north as the University of Vermont. Hinda and I have two kids, and five grandchildren from 18 to 6.

Hinda and I now live full time in Boca Raton, FL., where it’s like a year ‘round summer camp for seniors. I’m still a drummer, and play in a trio in our community. I also run a rock ‘n roll club, where three of us, including me, present research we have done on favorite bands, singers, eras, cities, music styles. We cover everything from the late ‘40’s to the mid ‘70’s. It beats playing shuffleboard!

Memories

Like everybody else, I have lots of memories. Here are three:

Being in gym class in November of 1963 with Mr. Warner leading us through an apparatus drill. Mr. Stanavage gets on the PA to tell to go to home room because the President had been shot. And my first thought was,…nope, I’m not gonna put that in print.

Playing in a pickup band at a pep rally in 1964, fronted by the cheerleaders. We played “Be True To Your School” while the cheerleaders did their routine.

Walking back to school from Jack Lundy’s with my cousin and classmate, Lea Silverman. We went after being invited by Principal Len Gardner, who drove there. Walking back, Lea and I were caught by Mr. Rusnak, who marched us to Mr. Gardner’s office. He kept a straight face while he briefly reprimanded us. Mr. Rusnak left the office, and the three of us erupted in laughter. A couple years later, I ran into him on the NYU campus.

Tammy has a son, David, who is a junior at West Chester University, majoring in mathematics, actuarial science. So smart, my grandson! I was married for over 20 years to my late husband, John, who just passed away last December.

I worked for several banks during my career in corporate cash management and retired from BONY Mellon in 2006. I’ve been fortunate to have travelled all over Europe and a big chunk of the great U S. Going back to Paris very soon.

I am in the process of moving permanently to Rehoboth Beach, where I have a lovely home on Red Mill Pond. At the beach, I'm president of my HOA and I am active in Autism Delaware. I’ve also volunteered for years at Kutz Nursing Home.

Memories

There are several fond memories centered particularly around Leader Corps, choir, drama

Funniest/scariest moment was when I climbed out of the Leader Corps window to run across the lawn to Dick Clark's Steer Inn for a hamburger. Ate, got back safely, climbed back into the Leader Corps window, went to English class. Oh, boy! Miss Levy had seen me and read me the riot act after class. Scary! But… worth it!

I have two children, my daughter Heather, her husband Reyn, Gracie and Luke, my 6 year old twin grand kids, and my son Danny, who owns a restaurant in Northern California. My late husband, Gregg, and I always had a “thing” for Connecticut where I’ve lived since 1972. He was a veterinarian, so all of us are animal lovers. After a few different career paths, I became a marketing director opening nursing, assisted living and independent homes. I also became involved in politics in my small town. After a health setback, I needed to reinvent myself, as I couldn’t return to my career. Thus Whiskers Pet Sitting/Dog Walking Service was born.
