Name | Allen Bernstein | |
Spouse | Christine | |
Bio | In the summer of 1969 I had graduated from the U. of D., enrolled in graduate school, gotten married (first of three), was waiting to hear from the draft board about a tour of Viet Nam, wished I could go with my friends to a concert at a place called Woodstock, and watched in awe as humans stepped foot on the moon. That September I started teaching at Wilmington High School (currently the home of Cab Calloway School and Wilmington Charter). Ten years later I heard about a new program starting in the county serving the needs of academically gifted students. I interviewed for a position in the program. I was given quite a bit of freedom in being able to select subjects that were demonstrated to expand the interests and abilities of students who challenged the teacher as the teacher challenged them. Over the next thirty years I taught at A.I. duPont Middle School, Heritage, Linden Hill, Warner, and Brandywine Spring Elementary Schools. Once I was honored by being selected the district teacher of the year. I retired in June, 2010, and am residing with my wonderful wife Christine. I am on the board of the Delaware Photographic Society. Talk to me if you'd like to join. I spend my summers growing vegetables and fruit.
Memories | “The Circuit” – Early evenings would start on the blacktop basketball court behind P.S. If it got too dark, sometimes we would climb on the roof to readjust the spotlights. Then it was on to Matson Run to see if anyone knew what was going on. Listening to AM pop stations, we would drive up to the Pit on Concord Pike. We'd drive around the parking lot until we were eyeballed by Charbelly. Forced to buy something, we'd get in the takeout line, changing positions to extend our stay. Back to the car and, with any luck, we found someone's house where we could go. Sometimes we would just sit in the car and listen to the Phillies game. Life was good. |
Name | Susan (Bowman) Cherrin

Name | Maryann (Brown) Brown-Martin
Bio | Recently, I relocated to Laurel, Maryland to be near my family. I have had two great careers: social work and financial services. Recently I retired after 32 years as a Financial Advisor. I enjoy baking, and I anticipate it will be my next semi-career, since I bake the best chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter cookies and pound cake you have ever tasted. Love traveling and have lived in Washington State, Germany, Philadelphia and North Carolina. My daughter has the same love of travel as she went to undergrad in Chicago and grad in Miami. She lives in LA now and is a writer/Film Maker attempting to get her script “REPASS” to the big screen.
Memories | My best memories were attending our basketball games starring Ron Harris, Lucky Stone and Butch Williams and my time in Leader Corps. |
Name | Robert “Bob” Brown
Bio | After graduating from Delaware State College (now University), I moved to Rochester, NY, where I worked for Eastman Kodak for 10 years. But after 10 years of very cold winters, I moved to San Francisco, where I live now. I am currently a project manager with Kaiser Permanente (a healthcare organization), at least until June, 2016, when I plan to retire. I spent 35 years of my life in San Francisco with my eventual husband, Bob Hayn, who passed in April, 2015. After I retire, I plan to marry a very special man, Norm Lynde, and I am planning to work with various non-profits in the Bay Area.
Memories | One would think that my best of memories high school would be Mr Laird's plays, Senior Choir with Mr Reid and Band and that would be somewhat true. The actual best memories are the friendships that I developed by participating in those activities and how we all prepared each other for life after high-school. |
Name | Lynn (Buckmaster) Goldman
Spouse | Art | |
Bio | Lucky to be married to my high school sweetheart for 45 years, we have remained in Wilmington. Our older son Eric and his wife Julie live an hour away in Yardley, PA. They gave us two terrific grandchildren, Jack, age 12, and Sydney, age 8. We see them often and bring them to stay with us whenever possible. Ryan and his wife Jaime are in southern Florida and we travel out of the cold of winter to spend a few months near them. After graduating from the University of Delaware in Elementary Education and teaching in the then A I duPont School District, I tutored privately for 37 years and loved the direct impact. While helping with the bookwork for the business, I also substituted and worked for the UofD, supervising Junior El Ed majors in field experiences for 8 years. After operating D & M Electronics for 35 years, Art and I were fortunate to sell it and retire at 55. Since then we have made a point to travel as much as possible, spend time with our dear friends and explore new interests. I returned to develop my artistic interest with watercolors and love to paint from the photos Art takes on our trips. We are healthy and we know we are blessed for that.
Memories | There are so many happy memories for me from PS. Best of all, cheerleader practices and games, and the Leader Corp room and friends. Miss Hay, Miss Shadd, Mrs. Jenny, Mrs. Chady and Mrs. Gressle all probably had an influence on my decision to become a teacher. Dear Mrs. Farrand waved to Art and me as we left the parking lot one morning on June 3rd as we were skipping school for the day. Yes, she called our parents, and yes, it was worth it. We all were so lucky to have such an outstanding collection of teachers and to share them with wonderful classmates of such diversity and talent. |

Memories | Best memories: Enjoyed the football games and riding down Market Street after a winning game, wildly shaking our pompoms out the window. Then there were the basketball games, especially the year PS won the Blue Hen Conference Basketball Championship. And hanging out by the lockers between classes. I felt so grown-up on graduation night. Favorite Memory: The one and only time I ever bagged a class was Mrs. Autman's gym class. I got caught and so did the person who called out my # in gym class. We still laugh about this 50 years later. |
Name | Lucy (Fahey) Webster |
Name | Dorothy “Dottie” (Geist) Manuel
Bio | Married to Richard Manuel for 18 years, widowed for 27 years. Five children – John (in FL), Richard, Mark, Kathleen and Brian, as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. I graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1968 and began my more than 46 years of employment there. I tell everyone I grew up there! For approximately 35 years, I have worked as Clinical Administrator, mostly on night shift. I love to read, travel and attend plays and shows. I am looking forward to the coming subscription series at the Playhouse.
Memories | Trading places with my twin to do dissections in 9th grade science. The teacher never knew! Having my chemistry notebook stolen from my locker and being given only one day to redo it. Then I got an A- because it was late! |
Name | Ruth (Geist) Westendorf
Spouse | Chuck | |
Bio | Married to Charles (Chuck) Westendorf (Alexis I. DuPont grad) for 45 years. We have two sons and six grandchildren. Matthew and his wife and three children live in West Lafayette, IN. Michael and his wife and three children live in Dover – much closer to home! In 2010, I began my bionic woman journey, getting my first total knee replacement, following in 2012 with my other knee. After graduation, I continued my employment with DuPont until my children were born, went on a part-time role for a few years, was involved with school and church activities and also had a secretarial service in my home. I went back to DuPont until my husband (also with DuPont) got transferred to Greenville, SC. I actually moved in next door to a fellow P.S. grad (1959) who was my cousin’s best friend in school – talk about small world! We then spent two years in Parkersburg, WV before coming back to Delaware in 1992. That year, I began a 22-year career as a marketing/proposal coordinator with the Newark office of BE&K Engineering, an E&C firm from Birmingham, AL that was later acquired by (KBR) Kellogg, Brown & Root from Houston, TX. I retired in late May last year and now am part of the “sandwich” generation, spending time with my elderly mother and then my 2-year old granddaughter in Dover. I say I spend my days reliving old memories with mom and making new ones with our granddaughter. I especially enjoy my time with her as we get to experience the kinds of things we missed with our other “grands” living 700 miles away. While I enjoy reading and shows, I am a devoted “rubber stamping addict” who makes all my own greeting cards (160 at Christmas last year) and goes to craft shows with my stamping group.
Memories | Definitely trading places with my twin Dottie to dissect a frog in 9th grade science. Dottie thinks Mr. Rusnak didn’t know about it but he definitely did! I had to sit in his office the next day and draw a perfect diagram from the textbook. Our all girls’ English class in 9th grade with Mr. Laird – great bunch of ladies! The level of talent in the wonderful shows by Mr. Laird and Mr. Reid. I was proud to be on the yearbook staff, only to receive my copy of the yearbook and discover that, once again, we had gotten mixed up! Our write-ups each had the other person’s picture with it. |
Name | Constance “Connie” (Georgis) Dougherty
Bio | I was married to my ‘high school days’ sweetheart, Vince, until 2005, when he sadly passed. Of course, that was difficult, but I am blessed with two great children, Ken and Kelly. Ken has a lovely daughter, Isabella, 14, and Kelly has two adorable children, Madeleine, who is 9, and Tyler, who has just turned 6. As any proud grandmother would say, they are a joy. I spent many years teaching preschool – 4 and 5 year olds. That was both rewarding and fun – HONEST-haha!! Now I spend my time doing some traveling (I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Greece), volunteering, spoiling my grandchildren, and ‘hanging out’ with my many friends. They, too, are a blessing in my life.
Memories | A fond memory I have of my high school years is attending the football games and then heading to the Charcoal Pit and “tackling” a huge Dynamiter sundae with a group of friends. Those were the days – No Guilt! |

We have had long-lived dogs through the years, one basset hound and one bearded collie. We have lived in the same house since 1973. Taught and tutored math. Worked for Kaplan Educational Centers for 16 years in standardized test prep and admissions. Worked in college admissions, and since 1999 have been an independent educational consultant specializing in college admissions. |
Name | Arthur Goldman | |
Spouse | Lynn (Buckmaster)
Bio | Married to my wonderful wife for 45 years and we have two sons and two grandchildren. Attended UofD, enlisted in the Army Reserves, worked for, then took over our family business of D & M Electronics in 1977. As CEO and with Lynn as CFO, we enjoyed the electronic revolution of computers through Y2K until retiring in 2003. Have always lived in Wilmington, but we now enjoy our winters in Florida. Ever since 6th grade, I have enjoyed playing the saxophone and played in a local R&B band until just recently. I had fun learning to play the accordion, and began golf after retirement. Photography is another hobby I have kept current.
Memories | The great plays and musicals every year, Ms.Gormley's English classes, and being with friends, many we have kept through the years. Sigma Phi's Crystal Ball and Sunday meetings were always fun. PS and our class were very special. |

I have been married to Laura for coming up on 44 years with two grown chidden, Jessica and Blake, who both reside in California. I also have continued to follow my true passion of performing in musical theater.
Memories | Well, I guess the Friday night dances and performing in the musicals under the direction of Mr. Laird. |
Name | Doris (Hagerty) McKnew
Spouse | Bob | |
Bio | I didn’t make it to graduation, since I was off in Düsseldorf, Germany with AFS. After only a few weeks home, I left again for Dickinson College, where I met my husband, Bob. We’ve been married 45 years and have lived all over — Hanover NH, Chicago, Houston, Boston, Short Hills, NJ, and San Francisco, as dictated by his career in investment banking. In 2000, he wandered home from the bank one morning and announced, “Guess what? I just retired!” It was a red letter day — our oldest came home from college soon after and announced, “Guess what? I just got my belly button pierced!” A year later we moved to Williamsburg, VA. We have been blessed with good health and 2 wonderful daughters. Anne (35) ditched the belly button ring when she married Ryan Eckhoff, and they live in Ridgefield, CT, with their 2 kids, Kayla (4) and Bryant (2). Great kids! But after babysitting them for a week, I think our 18-year spacing was much easier! Jamie (17) is a high school senior. We put over 3000 miles on my car this summer, visiting what seemed like every college on the East Coast north of Washington DC. I'm not sure the Common App is much of an improvement over the “old school” application process — Ask me after she hits send!
Memories | Best memories would be leader corps stuff – football concessions, Miss Gilgenast on the rings at tryouts, going to the beach with the seniors when I was a junior, since I would not be there senior year, having our own little space, so we didn’t need lockers. All I know is I still have the occasional nightmare where I can’t find my locker, or I'm lost trying to get to lunch or the gym! |

Name | Jeffry Katz | |
Spouse | Carole Hogan | |
Bio | [Note: I got this information from Jeff in February, 2015. He died in August, 2015. See Obituaries. — Dave Kristol] Or course you can share any information you like with the class. Just ask and ye shall receive. I doubt though that I can attend [the reunion] though I'd like to. But it's not an impossibility. I'm currently being treated for an acute leukemia. So any travels will be subject to my doc's say-so. This interrupted a 35 year career in adult and pediatric anesthesia; don’t know yet whether I'll go back to work. I have a lovely wife who has been an amazing caretaker. When I was feeling well during treatment I was hers for total knee replacement last spring. We’ve got two great boys, married, no grandkids. One is a geologist in Colorado and the other a radiologist in Pittsburgh. |

I have been a property manager for the last 25 years and really love it. Can’t seem to decide when to retire. Have many wonderful friends from high school and my life now.
Memories | My most memorable times in PS were really just hanging with my friends, getting lunch from the Post House, math class with Mr. Ferrell, and Mr. Gardner, our principal. My high school years seem to me to be the best, which is why I decided to help organize the reunion. Can’t wait to see everyone! |
Name | David Kristol | |
Spouse | Marjorie Brandriss
Bio | Hmmm, how do you summarize 50 years? Let's see. I’ve been married 39 years, no children, one fur-kid. I recently retired after a 40-year career in software development, which has been my passion since 1964. I’ve had four employers, including Bell Labs (19 years) and Boeing (12 years). I continue to marvel that we're all walking around with computers in our pockets that are far more powerful than the room-size computers I first used. My wife, Marjorie, retired a few years ago. She was a Professor of Microbiology at NJ Medical School. I’ve lived in PA, MA, and NJ, with a detour to AZ while in the Army, and annual summer visits to ME. Among my hobbies: gardening, bicycling, birding, listening to classical music.
Memories | I'm thankful for the great preparation my favorite teachers at P.S. gave me: Mr. Ferrell, Mrs. Chady, Mrs. Nale. And I'm ever thankful that Miss Bryson was a stickler for grammar and rhetoric. Another great memory is the Honor Society trip to Washington, D.C. Anyone remember this… Community: a group of people living and working together for the good of all. Here's one specific memory: In Miss Bryson's English class, I was talking about something and used the work “snuck.” Miss Bryson game me a withering look, and I sheepishly said “Sneaked?” |

Attending basketball games and then going to the Charcoal Pit – eating cheese steak sandwiches and attempting to eat the “Kitchen Sink”. Going on “joy rides” in “Beaver Valley”. Physics class and overhead projectors with Mr. Dubbs. Being completely lost in Mr. Ferrell's math class. Diagramming sentences with Ms. Amy Joy Wocko – what a name! Senior year English class with Marie E. Gormley and my senior paper on T.S. Elliot's poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Choir and performing Handel's Messiah with Mr. Reid and Mr. Hoberg as soloist. Sororities and fraternities – in high school! Reciting Psalm 117 (the shortest psalm) in home room. Learning to dance to Rock ‘n Roll music in Harvey Jacobs's basement. Playing “spin the bottle” at parties. |
Name | Rhea (Lobel) Levy | |
Bio | How ironic! The NFL and I have been celebrating the same “numbers” for years! While they have the Super Bowl, I, and my husband, Stan, have wedding anniversaries (this year, our 49th!). We're the parents of Faith, 46; Bill, 44; Ellen, 41; and the grandparents of Zack, 6. I have been employed by the DuPont Company, Gratz Hebrew High School, two Nursing Homes, and the Department of Elections. I’ve also held community positions and served my local synogogue board. Then, when I received three different diagnoses, I chose to put myself “On Hold (Temporary).” I'm extremely lucky to have walked through all the doors, and now able to enjoy life again. Thank G-d, my entire family and my life are back to me. I have traveled around the world, volunteered, and cooked for less fortunate people.
Memories | I'll always remember the neighborhoods around P.S. (and even the downtown area!); the inscription over the main doors: P.S. DuPont High School; wearing so much blue and gray (on Fridays); chairing the Pierrean's layout staff; being a part of P.S.‘s chorus and choir; and appearing in lots of Mr. Bruce Laird's (GREAT) performances; and, of course, all of my close friends. |

Name | Stephen Ritner | |
Spouse | Cathryn Rosen | |
Bio | Married to Cathryn Rosen (33 years), children Scott (32), a PhD candidate in Political Theory getting married in July, 2015; Molly (28) works in campaign politics – now the campaign manager for a Virginia state election (prior mid-west finance coordinator for Dem. Congressional Campaign Committee); Jesse (22) graduated Skidmore College this past May (taking a year “off” working and hopefully will follow his sister's footsteps and be a ski instructor this winter in Aspen). (Started late and went long!!) No grandchildren – but maybe someday!? I have practiced law in Philly all my life, starting out as a “poverty lawyer,” working for the neighborhood legal services program. (Thought I could “change the world,” but apparently did not do such a good job.) I did however help some people out along the way. I went through something of a change in legal careers and developed into a business and entrepreneurial lawyer for most of the last 30 years or so. Cathryn is a lawyer by education but has been an undergraduate professor at Temple in the criminal justice program at the University for most of our married life.
Memories | My retrospective look at PS goes like this. We were all very fortunate. We lived in a great neighborhood, we generally liked each other, no one was very rich (although some were better off than others), nor was anyone really poor or destitute. Most of us got educated, became successful citizens, parents, and spouses. We attended a completely integrated high school with very few, if any, problems, and we didn’t even realize that was the case. It was just the way it was – and pretty good way to grow up, as well. |

Name | Jane (Sklut) Goldberg |
Spouse | Steve |
Name | Deborah “Debbie” (Smith) Long
Spouse | Joe | |
Bio | I moved to the Washington, D.C., area after graduating from Goldey-Beacom College as an Executive Secretary to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in Northern Virginia. I fell madly in love with the energy and beauty of D.C. almost immediately and still feel the same way about it today. Two years after moving to D.C., I married my husband, Joe, who was in the U.S. Army at the time. Two years later, we were assigned to the Stuttgart, Germany area through the Army, where we lived for three years and where our first daughter was born. From there we were assigned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where our son was born. We moved back to Delaware after my husband was discharged from the Army and accepted a Postal Service position in Wilmington. Our youngest daughter was born about a few years later. At age two she developed Type I Diabetes. Gee, I'm beginning to see a “two-year pattern” here – hmmm. As a result, I became heavily involved with the Delaware Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is an organization that sole fundraises to support diabetes research to find a cure for Type I Diabetes. I returned to work when our youngest entered the first grade after being asked by a veterinarian if I would be interested in working for his animal clinic. Throughout the years here in Delaware, I have also worked for the Justice of the Peace Court System, the State Office of Volunteerism, Cigna Insurance Company, and Christiana Care Health System (where I started out working in the hospital's Medical Libraries and presently am in the Pastoral Services Department). I have volunteered for many years for a local hospice organization, visiting patients. In 2005, I volunteered with the American Red Cross and spent three weeks in the New Orleans, LA, area directly following Hurricane Katrina (which actually proved to be one of the very best experiences of my life) to offer support to Katrina's victims while they were in Red Cross shelters. While there, I adopted an amazing dog who had found herself homeless after the hurricane. I returned to New Orleans two years later for two weeks (hmmm – back to the “two-year” thing again) to help in the reconstruction of a home in the Ninth Ward for a displaced family.
Memories | One of the things I enjoyed while in high school was playing field hockey during gym classes. I also look back with a smile on my face when I think of attending our school's basketball and football games. Fun times. |
